1. Requirements and Recommendations for Warehouses and Industrial Plants
Product description: Luminaires used in warehouses must comply with specific regulations and requirements to ensure adequate, efficient, and safe lighting for storage, machinery operation, personnel movement, and product preservation.
The following requirements must be met:
1. Minimum technical conditions for lighting systems in Colombia. RETILAP.
2. Technical requirements to ensure the safety of electrical installations. RETIE, NEC, NTC 2050.
3. Luminaire marking (as applicable). RETILAP, IEC 60598-1, NTC 2230.
4. The use of high-efficiency LED luminaires is recommended. IEC 62722-2-1, IES LM-79, IES LM-80, RETILAP.
5. Use of presence sensors to automate on/off switching and reduce consumption. ASHRAE 90.1, RETIE, RETILAP, EN 12464-1.
6. IP65 or higher in dusty or humid environments; in dry indoor areas, IP40 or IP54 may suffice. NEC, NTC 2050, IEC 60529 / EN 60529.
7. In refrigerated warehouses or areas with frequent washing, a minimum of IP66 is required. NEC, NTC 2050, IEC 60529 / EN 60529, RETILAP.
8. Mechanical Resistance – IK Classification: In environments with a high risk of impact (e.g., forklift traffic), luminaires with an IK08 classification or higher are recommended. IEC 62262 / EN 62262.
9. Over-temperature and short-circuit protection. NEC, NTC 2050, ANSI C82.77-5-2015, IEC 60598-2-3 / EN 60598-2-3, UL 1598.
10. Implement luminaires with optics designed to minimize glare (UGR 22 if personnel are working in the area). EN 12464-1, RETILAP.
11. Adequate distribution for high aisles or between shelving (e.g., asymmetric distribution for shelving). EN 12464-1.
12. Easy to install and maintain, minimizing maintenance (preferably with quick or tool-free connections). IEC 60598-1, IEC 61995-1.
13. Vibration-resistant design (in areas with heavy vehicle traffic). ANSI C136.31.
14. Operating temperature range: in standard warehouses: 0 °C to 45 °C; in refrigerated or frozen warehouses: -25 °C or less (requires special luminaires). IEC 62722-2-1, RETILAP, IEC 60598-1.
15. Use industrial LED luminaires such as High Bay (bell-shaped), linear, or modular types depending on the height and design of the space. EN 12464-1, RETILAP.
16. Select luminaires suitable for applications in corrosive environments. ASTM B117, ISO 9227.
17. Conduct a photometric study to ensure compliance with illumination levels according to areas and tasks, both horizontally and vertically, as well as uniformity and glare. RETILAP, EN 12464-1.
18. Eliminate flicker to prevent visual fatigue in continuous work environments. IEEE 1789-2015, RETILAP.
19. Safety requirements: consider all ways your lighting system needs to promote a safe environment. IEC 60598-1, IEC 62471.
20. Employ luminaires suitable for work in areas with explosion risk (due to dust or gases). ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU, API RP 500 / NFPA 497, NEC, NTC 2050, IEC-60079.
